Equestrian Club An Interview with…. Caitlin Wornham, NSEA National Champion

How did you get into riding?

My mum show jumped to a high level and got myself and my sister straight in the saddle.

How old were you when you first sat on a pony / horse?

I was literally days old when I was held on a pony. Tommy was my first pony and I sat on him as soon as I was physically able to.

What is the NSEA?

The NSEA is the National Schools Equestrian Association where you compete for your school/college. My secondary school had a team when I joined but they all left that year so I competed as an individual and then continued when I joined Hartpury.

How did it make you feel to win the 1.10m NSEA National Championships?

I was so happy when we won. I had jumped a fast, careful first round where we finished 2nd over all so going into the jump off in reverse order, we had a good draw as the penultimate rider. Wizz answered every single question immediately. I came round to the last and glanced at the clock but my eyesight is so bad I couldn’t see it so just galloped.

What is the best part about competing in these types of competitions?

Competing at NSEA gives me a sense of achievement and something to aim for. Every year I’ve managed to qualify for the main international arena at Hickstead and the National Finals.

What is it like being the only person to represent Hartpury?

It is lonely being the only rider for Hartpury. And restrictive because there are some classes that are for teams only. Would be great to have some teammates.

Tell us about your Horse Wizz?

He is a Dutch warmblood, he is 18 but still thinks he is 5.

How did you prepare for the competition whilst studying at Hartpury?

I went home the weekend before and competed At Addington which is where the finals were to get my eye in but that was all. I have to rely on my mum to keep Wizz fit for me.

Who is your inspiration?

Not to be cringey but probably my mum.

How do you keep riding fit when you are away from home?

I don’t do anything specific but walking up the hill at Hartpury helps!

What are your plans for the future? Academic, Career, Equine?

I don’t really have any plans for the future, but I know I don’t want to go to uni. But there’s so many things I do want to do so I’ll probably just gain as much experience as I can. Maybe work abroad or an apprenticeship. My placement is in event management which I really enjoy and may continue doing.

Any words for anyone reading?

Take every opportunity that comes your way.
